About Fernwood

A design office that builds its own work

Fernwood began as a one-person design practice and grew a construction crew so that the plan and the garden would match. Today about twenty-five people work here: designers, a horticulturist, masons, carpenters and planting crews.

Every project has one site lead from the first dig to the final walk. The plan stays on site, and any change is drawn and agreed before it is built.

On every site

  • One site lead from first dig to final walk

  • Utilities marked through Miss Utility (811) before any digging

  • Daily cleanup, and a written note at the end of each stage

Who leads the work

Each of them is on site, not only in the office.

  • A woman in a straw hat and work overalls trims a conifer branch with pruning shears

    Hyejin Yoo

    Founder and principal designer

Draws every plan and walks each site with the client before the first dig.

  • A man with a beard carries long-handled loppers over his shoulder beside a young hedge

    Kieran Calhoun

    Construction director

Runs the stone and carpentry crews and sets the order of work on every site.

  • A man pushes a wheelbarrow loaded with potted plants along a path

    Toshio Kaneshiro

    Head horticulturist

Chooses and sources the plants, and checks every planting after its first season.
